Here's something I've been working on. I had a fellow from the leatherwall approach me about making him a Deerslayer type recurve. This is my first attempt at such a bow and I'm pretty happy with the outcome. Its not a exact replica since I really had nothing to go on other than some pictures I found on the Internet, I will make a few changes on the next one, but this one shoots real nice. Its 64" ntn Hickory backed black locust core with a heat tempered hop hornbeam belly. 55#@28" Some may think this is a odd combination of woods, but it is what I had on hand. I still need to add some tip over lays of locust and finish shaping the tips and brush nocks. I'm going to add a built up shelf out of leather as was done on the originals and cover it with a leather grip once the finish is applied.

Looks good to me. Have you shot it yet?
-
Sweet looking bow Ryan. Looking forward to braced and full draw pics. I love the looks and effectiveness of the brush nocks. I've been meaning to try them. Chris Cade does a beautiful job with them.
-
looking really Good ryano! Great use of native woods too! I really love them recurves with brushnocks, awesome!
Looking forward to more pics O:)

that looks really cool Ryan, i am excited to see it finished
-
I really like the looks of that one! I can't wait to see the finished product.
-
Thanks Guys. ;D
Its already been shot quite a bit, just trying to decide exactly how to finish her up.
-
Nice looking job Ryan! I'd think just a nice set of skins on the back and finish? Hard to get a good dye job on hickory, as far as blending in colors. The wood combos will give it a nice contast I would think.
-
Looks interesting.Good looking piece of work.Ron

Serious candidate for April LBOM

Timo, I don't really have any skins on hand I want to give up right now. I'll have to see what I can come up with.
Thanks for all the nice coments guys....
Chris, winds of change? lol. I always make a couple of hickory backed bows a year....gotta mix it up once in a while to keep things interesting. :)
-
Finished pictures of this bow to come soon.... ;D

-
Nice bow Ryan. Really like that backing and the Grumley tips.
-
That is a beauty. Excellent work. ;)

-
Super job, Ryan. Outstanding bow.
-
Oh man, that is a beaut.
Now I've got to ask a couple of questions:
1. you said last month that you had already shot it quite, yet, it looked as if it had never been drawn back as straight as it was unstrung.
2. the belly lam was toasted
3. HOW DID YOU DO THAT????
Was the belly lam toasted before glue up and about the lack of set I am totally cornfused!?
-
Looks real nice Ryan, Good contrast of colors working and blending, tip work is quality.Never was a fan of the rattan handle wraps, but you made that one look good.Tiller looks spot.
-
very nice Ryan. ive always admired these bows. i like the back too...
Phil

Thanks for the nice words fella's.
Christophero, it was glued up with reflex much of which it lost so the limbs stand pretty straight now. If I were to do it again with the same wood combo's I'd of made inner limbs a touch wider which would have helped it hold more of the reflex. The hhb was heat treated after initial glue up and tillering to brace height. It is all glued up with urac 185 glue which heat doesn't effect once its cured. So you see the bow really has taken some set, it just doesn't follow the string. :)
Thanks Timo. I really like the rattan grip. It's becoming a favorite of mine. It gives a good positive grip and is more weather and wear resistant than leather. I do tend to like the narrower stuff better than the wide stuff. It conforms to the shape of the handle better.
-
WOW! Ryan, that baby is sure beautiful I hope you're bringing it along friday. You must have a ton of time in it? how far will it draw? Is it already spoken for? Maybe the nicest lam bow I've seen.
-
Thanks Chris. I'm glad you like it. I do have a lot of time in it. Its not really spoken for. It's only been drawn to 28" on the tillering rack and shot in at my 27" Draw. I'll bring it to hawkeye so you lay your grubby mitts on it. ;) ;D
-
Ohhh Man! That's a nice 'un ;D
I hope you still have it when you get to Pappys. Remember...I can shoot with either hand 8)
-
I wanna see it at Pappy's too!
Nice compromise between the orig Grumley brush nocks which were excessively massive in my estimation versus Marc's super skinny speed recurves.
-
That really is pretty. I love the backing. Not sure if I've ever seen cherry bark backing in person. I know it's used a lot. Certainly is a nice contrast and natural look.
-
That is a beaut Ryan
-
Very nice Ryan and something you don't see very often with the brush nocks.
-
Thanks guys. ;D I'm planning on bringing it to the classic so ya'll can check it out.
-
Beautiful,Can't wait to see it.
Pappy
-
Great pictures underscoring the fact that this is a Great Bow. A worthy candidate for April Laminated Bow of the Month
-
Nice bow Ryan, glad to see you playing with a few laminates. ;)
-
VERY NICE!! Super looking bow and some incredible craftsmanship! Nice job.
-
Thanks Guys. The pictures aren't really that great its hard to get good lighting in our house, but it was raining outside so I opted to stay in out of the rain. ;D
-
Ryan you have done it again, but that is what I expect when I see your bows, You are an exceptional craftsman, and I really don't know where to start complamenting you on such a beautiful bow.
Robb
-
Ryan, that is knarly (old word same meaning, good) look good to me. :)
-
That is close to being one of the finest bows I have seen on here. Looks great to me.
-
Those tips are sweet man. Very nice work!
-
Thanks so much for the kind words fella's. :)
-
Oh My,That came out sweet Ryan. Love the color contrast and some cool looking brush guards as well. Do you think the brush guards ad any noticeable hand shock or affect the shooting with the extra tip weight? Looks like a great shooter and have thought about doing some underlays by the tips but could never get myself to try it.
-
Thanks Keenan. It has no noticable hand shock. At least not to me. There's really not much to them. I'm sure as narrow as the tips are they are probably still lighter than some bows with wider tips are. I'm going to shoot it some more this weekend at hawkeye. I'll let you know what I think after that.
-
Ryano that is one of the nicest bows I think that you have made, be proud. Sorry I haven't been on line for a while but I have been in and out of hospital again.
Robb
-
I quit!!! Seriously, excellent bow as always, Ryan. You da' MAN!
Dan
-
I've been away from here for a little too long.
What a great few bows to come back to, yours and Manny's 'Monster'. :)
That is quite a stunning bow, the Cherry bark adds a neat element to it.
Your recurves never fail to make my jaw drop. ;)
