this was the second lightweight bow I made when my friend Jorik came by, and my first attempt at staining one. The handle has the unique ring pattern only sapling bows have, the elongated cirkles at the sides. Too bad the srip of bark didn't really show up after staining, but I'm pretty pleased with the results anyhow.
It's made from hazel, measures 68" ntn. fades are 2", total handle section is 8 1/2".
the width is 1 1/2" till midlimb, and slowly tapers to 3/8" nocks.
tipped with zebrano overlays, draws 50#@28"
as visible, I left the bark on for both astetic reasons and lazyness
I got some 'lady esquire shoe paint' or something like that. At least a leather dye, wich I bought in both black and dark brown, the little shoemakers' didn't have other colours. I applied the dark brown first, then added black spots, wich I faded out with alcohol (spiritus; 85% ethanol, 15% methanol)
You probably notice the scratches at the handle, this appeared perfectly sanded at first, but the dye just shows up every little scratch. Another lesson learned
I apologize for the bad fulldraw pictures, my sister wasn't all that happy t take them. She can shoot great pictures, though.

It looks Great! If you don't like those scratches, just sand them a little more and refinish it. Love the bark backing. ;)
-
Nice bow Nick. Neat job on the dye work.
-
Hey I like it Nick bet it is a great shooter, the length of the handle seems a bit much to me,but then I dont know a whole lot,a cool bow congratulations.
-
Hi,
Nice work!!
-
Great to see young bowyers! :) Love the bow, very nice job. Tips, tiller and especially the back,That is nice.
-
thanks guys!
the back actually the easiest thing to do, or not to do :p
just not touching it gave it this look ;) Hazel bark is quite goodlooking, imho, and a nice natural camo.
this young bowyer is more than just young, he's also lazy :) And I must admit I really enjoy being both of them!
if I sand these scratches away, I gotto re-apply the stain, wich micht dismatch with the other part's I didn't restain, and I'll probably end up removing the whole stain and trying to reapply it.
Just too lazy for it :p

thanks George! gotto thank you on PP aswell, gimme a sec :p
thanks Redwasp! it doesn't have an extraordinary cast, but shoots a lil' quicker than my other sapling bows, probably because of the very little set.
thank you Hawkbow, this one won't make meat, sadly. Bowhunting ain't allowed in the Netherlands!
thanks Rick! Hazel bark is just goodlooking eh? :)

Nick, GREAT JOB! Do me a favor, soak up all the great info from the old farts on here and do us proud. I loved that last pic!

Nice hazelnut bow, Nick. I have a hazelnut stave I'm working on now!
I have read about leaving bark on some wood bows but haven't tried it yet. I have added bark as decoration. Any special treatment for hazelnut bark?
-
thanks Pat! goodluck with your staves! take care with the hazel bark, you'd better sand it thin, since it likes to crack. You'll need a young and thin bark, so probably a 2" or thinner sapling.
yeah thanks Bulit! I'll do ;)
thanks JbL!
thanks alot staver! now go out! :p
thank you Bear!
thanks Medicineweel, bark seems to have something attractive :)
Dana, cruel world is already intruding, with a test week. ,, wich tomorrow starts :p Gotto start learning right now ;)

Nick, thanks for the insight. Thinning the bark(probably mostly the cambium?) makes since. I won't try it with my hazelnut because it is from a bigger stave but I will with a sapling. Thanks!
