Title: Here's a thought.........
Post by: Bushman452 on February 19, 2009, 06:55:15 am
Sambar deer are very becoming quite common in the state of Florida. Mostly in the St. Vicent Island region and yet I don't know if they allow archery in that area. I mean think about it, primitive bowhunting for free-ranging sambar stag in a region most of us know nothing about. Just a thought.

I'm pretty sure this man was born in FL but the deer was probably dressed out in the field in St. Vincent.

If Florida is anything like Texas....they were brought in for Canned Hunts behind High Fences on large Ranches....even the  Nuge has a High Fenced Ranch in Fairfield Texas with Oryx...Water Buffalo...and Stags...and a dozen other Exotics on it....seen it firsthand....when I worked to build a Power Plant between Corsicanna and Fairfield

Actually St. Vincent isn't a canned hunt area.

So they just brought them in and let them go for people to shoot (well, people with money and rifles I mean)?

Sambar Hunts are actually lottery hunts that you have to apply for so hunts like these happen only once a year.

What kind of terrain do they live in? And are they hard to hunt? Or is it just another of those species introduced out there for the sake of an easy kill by the select few who would kill them?Hawk

I think they were originally raised for their meat but wasn't successful. These deer are very intelligent and are about as challenging as a New Zealand red stag. Also they really like the swampy, wet terrain so expect to encounter a lot of alligators and feral pigs in that area.
