Hey fellers
I found these rocks sticking out of a ditch bankhttp://i325.photobucket.com/albums/k383/ronniecoursey/rocks/100_0323.jpg on a road cut just north of Dothan AL. The one in the photos was sticking out of the bank. There are others that were buried in white clay that was about the consistency of cold window putty the closer you got to the rock the harder the clay became until it turned into rock. The stuff seems to flake easily it has a rusty sheen as if it were dipped in rusty water and has a consistency about half way between ceramic and glass. Can anyone tell me anything about it?
Thanks Ronnie

That's what I was thinking Ronnie - looked just like the stuff that Knap sent to me. Looks like good stuff, I'd just about give my left..er arm for a truck load of that stuff :). Good luck with it..

I have a friend in that area who says he has plenty on his property and that a truck load should be no problem. If you want some you better come to the classic.

I have a couple of questions.
1.If it flakes well what benefits would I get by heating?
2.If I do need to heat it how long do I need to hold it at475?
Thanks Ronnie

f the stone is workable raw i wouald work it raw. buy if you heat it, you'll get a richer color, smother texture. if you dont like it to brittle and little tough 400 will do fine. c.p. has alot of water pockets in it. so you will need 8 hrs of dry time at 225. then raise it up to desires temp and hold for 8hrs. i like to work mine raw alot, but some like it easyer to work or prettier. most of the brown will turn reddish or caramel and slick up like snot. :)

Ron, you heat it and send it on over here and I will treat it reall nice! Heat and treat!!!
Yep! Its late here and I should go to bed!

That's some nice lookin stone. It looks a little grainy in the pics, so if you cook it it will probably gloss up really nice. Enjoy it man, a lot of guys who want to flintknap don't have access to good stone like that.

Sure hope you guys can make the Classic, fun hanging out with you and watching yall work your magic on those points! Cowboy, when you goin' to make a bow outta that wood I gave you? You're mighty good at working magic on wood as well as flint! ;)
