Title: Horsebow Questions?
Post by: darren1968 on January 14, 2009, 01:01:19 pm
Does anyone know if its possible to construct a horsebow with only wood laminates for the  limbs (without using fiberglass laminates), then to back them with either Genuine Sinew or Super Sinew as that offered by Bowstick, appling it with either Bowgrip 100 or Smooth On?
Secondly, i`m only guessing but is it correct to assume the thickness of the wood lamination used for the limbs affects the draw weight? If so does one need to tiller the limbs after consruction as is the case for selfbows & flatbows. Or do I need to calculate a given thickness to a given draw weight?
I`m looking for a draw of 55# to 60# @28", I look to use either Ash or Oak laminations as these woods seem readily available here in Romania.
I would be grateful of any ideas you can forward me on this issue
Thanks, Darren.

Absolutely I believe it is possible with wood.  The trick is the wood type. I would use Ipe and real sinew and glue it with hide glue if it were me. Justin

Chris Cade made a "no horn" horn bow a few years ago. I believe he used boo on the belly and real sinew on the back.
There was an article in an old PA magazine that was about a "hornless" horse bow. Do a search and see what you come up with.     Pat

Nice 1 Robutus!
What`s the draw weight?  What form did you use? I`ve been told by a supplier of materials for making horsebows, that the draw weight depends on the reflex designed into the form?

I like that one, James. I had fun shooting with James and Chris Cade at a deer target at about 80 yards. Yea, James can shoot long distance.

Nice bow. It looks like a hybrid between the Saluki Scythian and the replica that David Betteridge made of the ancient form of this bow.

looks like a nice bow, does it have a sinew back? and it looks like it has several laminated layers , but I can't quite see properly, or is it a single peice of wood in the core??

Dragon, I believe it has a raw boo back, tempered boo belly and a multi-lam core.

That is a cool bow.  Those horsebows are quite the weapon.
