How to work with cherry?
« on: November 24, 2008, 10:54:41 pm »
I cut a big cherry log yesterday while getting firewood and I can't remember if you have to take the sapwood off. This log is bout 12'' in diameter and 6' long. What I need to know is should I remove the sapwood or not for a bow. Also their is a green ring around the heart is that normal?

Black cherry? You can use either the sapwood or heart wood or both. I think the heart wood is a little better in compression than the sapwood though.  Sounds like you cut a pricey cherry log. lol..... Its worth more for lumber than bows.
Its November, I'm gone hunt'in.......

Yeah black cherry.  It would have made better lumber than firewood. I hope it won't hurt it that it got rained on today. I didn't have time to get in yesterday. I'm gonna get it in the building tomorrow.

A bow made out of the sapwood will look like any other wood...white
but a bow made with the heart wood is stunning :)

I made one with both sapwood and heartwood-that's another consideration-it looks pretty striking. People usually think it's a laminate.
