I got inspired after looking at Cowboy's point. I've been chipping all day, off and on. So, I took my heat treated piece and went to work on it. It was looking good, had a 6", almost thin, preform, when I hit the "crack". I can still get a point out of it, but not that 6"er I was after. :-\ :'(

That's sad to hear Eddie :'( ;D. That one I had was a lot bigger too but riddled with flaws on one end and across one face, as we knappers know - that's standard for a lot of different materials :-\.
If it come's to be Jesse, I'll hit the creek with ya. A lot of places I gather ya have to smack em all to see whats inside, but usually one in two are good ;D.
Thanks Mike: Too bad about the elk huntin. Your right, always next year. Best of luck to you and Joe!

yea Eddie thats common with this stuff, its a very challenging rock to knapp. but if you take your time and do it right and with some luck you can get a beautiful point.

Cowboy we could go down there but you would have to come a day before the shoot or stay after the shoot. its ganna be a all day trip,  3hrs down 5-6hrs of getting rock and 3hrs back.

We'll keep that tucked away Jesse - I ain't holding my breath ;D. If everything was to work out though, I got plenty of gas and room in the back of the truck :).

Nother quick question? Does that stuff turn red with heat treat? or is that natural?

its natural , that rock has a very high iron content. only thing the heat dose is makes it easier to knapp. and it might brighten up the colors a little.

10-4. I thought it kinda resembled what we called iron ore as kids that we found around here.

Can't wait to see some more of that color Eddie. Let us know how the heat treat goes, I'll prolly cook these two I got as soon as the ground dries out enough..

Cowboy, get one of those cheep turkey pans from the grocery store. and a small bag of fine sand from walmart.
Put the sand in the pan and bury the rock in the sand. put the pan in your oven, set oven at 250* then ramp it up 350* after 1hr  than ramp it to 450* after 2hr than 500* about 45min later.. let it soak at 500* for 5-8hrs than just tern the oven off let it cool for about 4hrs than crack the door to the the oven, then let it cool for another 3hrs.
Well Paul this is how i do it. Its to easy.  i would be afraid that ground cooking it might get it to hot.

Paul, I took one and sliced about 6 pieces out of it and put it in my toaster for 2hrs at 200dgs. Then ramped it up to 450dgs for 3 more hours then turned it back down to 200dgs and went to bed. Turned it off in the morning. Got home from work this afternoon and ran some test flakes ,, and ,,it  is nice. ;D

Sure can, I was suprised how easy some of it cut. There was some hard places but it still wasn't bad. It seems the more color the easier it was. Hope I didn't cheat, but I sure wanted to get the most out of that pretty rock.

It does the same thing when sawing it, the water changes different colors. It would probally make a good stain, or paint mixed with hide glue.
