New Walnut Recurve--all heart wood--
« on: November 08, 2008, 10:51:04 am »
Work is really slow right now and i got some extra time off this week that i didnt plan on so i spent the whole day finishing this up..  i am very very pleased with it. the wood is beautiful and it shoots "oh so" smooth.
its a wee sprite, measuring in at 55 inches tip to tip
the limbs are roughly 1 1\2 wide. i let the grain determine the width.
it has several knots that really add to the beauty. and small static recurves for just a little "pick me up"

This was out of a stave that my friend Dax sent me, it was mostly sapwood but had enough heartwood to do the trick so i decided it would be more aesthetically pleasing if i chased it down to the heartwood. due to twisting i had only 55 inches of good wood to work with so i had to make it count.
it came in just a little under weight so i decided to try and flip the tips.  one of the tips had a large knot and i knew wouldnt take the bend well....but that doesnt stop me .  the one side recurved tight and perfect  so i wrapped the knot up with b-50  and boiled it for about 45 minutes and then bent it too.  the knot kept wanting to pull the recurve out so i wrapped it with b-50 again and then glued a thick leather patch on to make it stiffer..worked beautifully   so i hid the leather with the chocolate beaver strips and ofcourse then had to match it on the other side.  all in all - turned out great.
shoots real quiet and quick and pulls right about 54-56 lbs @ 25ish inches

Very nice bow, I like the recurved tips.

Nice shot, now you have to change the apple for a smaller target.

An excellent bow for such a short stave. You're turning out some really nice work.

Very nice and a good job on seeing the bow in the stave :)

Nice little bow. Did you use steam or dry heat to recurve the tips. I have tried bending BW before with no success.
Good thing your Dad wasn't looking at you when you shot. He might have flinched! :o    Pat

Thanks a lot guys,  I like this one better than the last osage recurve i made..lol   but atleast they are 2 different bows entirely- heavy and light. so i'll get use out of them both.

Pat-  I boiled them actually, i was using steam but wasnt getting the results i was looking for so i stood the bow up in the pot and boiled about 6 inches of them, then i bent it really slow and let the weight of my arm creep the bend in...Walnut does not seem very willing to bend, i was lucky to get this much i believe.
