Osage planks

There are several large ossage planks for sale near here.   Huge, heavy things, two inches or more thick, just slabbed off the tree.  I'm real tempted to buy one if I can get board bows out of it.   The question is: MUST I DO THE SINGLE RING thing or can I saw out blanks like I do with hickory and just make board selfbows?

  You can saw blanks and back them with Hickory or Bamboo.

What Eddie said....back them with Maple or Hickory ...or even Boo....Aint nothing wrong with a Hedge Board Bow ....for sure.....

i have one in the works right now,but havent had a lot of time the last 2 weeks for working on any of my projects.too much damn yard work this time
of year and travels and hopefully hunting pretty quick here also.
but hopefully soon.

Hey speaking of Osage planks. Is there a paricular way it should be sawn or can you just back it and its ok? Reason I ask is I picked up a pretty nice 1x10x84" osage board from a guy that has an incredible woodlot and cuts custom woods for  cabinet makers etc... Its been just sitting in the shop and I keep looking at it wondering if its cut right for a bow. Danny

You can back it no matter which way it is cut...as long as it doesnt have massive grain runoff....but I prefer Edge Ringed or Bias Cut myself
