I cant find a ring!
« on: October 13, 2008, 09:57:20 pm »
I found a blacklocust tree hidden where no one would miss it... moving on. I went down two heartwood rings and pealed it for a few inches and now I CANNOT find where the ring ends to keep peeling. I hate to do it with hand tools but I'm about this close from decrowming this thing... hey, what would a boackwards BL bow be like?

I can't comment. I couldn't find the ring the first time I tried BL either. I gave it away and the guy I gave it to broke it.

Its thick on the sapwood. Where the end cut is will show you where the sapwood begins and ends.

I have made De crowned Paddle Bows with Locust before.....they turned out just fine...........

Get down through the Sapwood....and the rings are a lot easier to follow....you can a;so try shoe polish...it helps to track the ring you are scraping on.

Look down the stave towards bright natural light. The growth ring ought to jump out at you. Trace it with a pencil so you can keep track of it.     Pat

How do you know you lost it? BL rings are usually pretty thick. You may be in one. Otherwise, Pat gave great advice. Jawge.

I use a scraper to clean the area up and then do what Pat/Jawges said.Sometimes you can walk around it and look at it from different directions and see it the like Pat said I mark it with a pencil and move on.Get one all the way across it and then move on. :)

I have seen several staves where BL does not have prominent rings.  I don't like it and don't think those staves are as strong.

Why did you remove heart wood rings? Black locust rings are so thick usually you just remove the same wood and use the first heart wood layer?

Sometimes it helps to watch the rings on each edge or side too .Mark them with a pencil there and work from each side toward the center .Besides very good light ,a little water on the back can make the rings stand out also.
