Just minutes after the above photo was taken the billy immediately to the left of the yellow collared nanny, known by her ear tag as Ol' 67, began tending her. It's coming into the rut for them and he was looking for a little sumthin-sumthin'. She was not too receptive and sparred with him. He hooked her in the chest and opened up a rather deep would in her front right leg. She bled out at least half a liter this morning before it clotted up. Last seen half an hour ago docilely feeding next to him as if nothing had happened. Ain't love grand?
And as a side note, there is a very small population of these goats in the Black Hills, estimated as few as 75. It is widely believed the billy tending the nanny is her son from three years ago. Last year about a dozen more were trapped in Colorado and released her in order to widen the gene pool.
