Zebra wood?

I was thinking of using some zebra wood for tip overlays, but i have no experience with the wood, is it hard, soft etc?   thanks ty

nice, any idea how the price is on it? like at a wood crafting speciality store or such?  And what kind of design do you think would be best for it? i like the longer pointy tips, but do you think it could handle the stress of a narrow point while being strung and such?

   I don't have a clue what it cost. What I have used was given to me. I have used it on needle tip points. I am just not sure it is hard enough to use Fastflight string with it.

Well Im laggin a little behind in the string department, I am still using Ariticial sinew ::).  It may be a little slower, but its cheap by golly lol   Ty.. Do you think it would be a worth investment to ungrade? I have shot Aritficial sinew since the begining and havent been dissapointed, i usually have an endless loop stlye string with 5 70# strands.

Heya

Well, I must say, your artificial sinew string is fine.
It is basically same material as b50, actually I think it better quality sometimes, varies spool to spool.

When constructed well, it makes pretty good string I think, no need for upgrade.

Sorry, I know not of zebra wood, I see it used for tip overlay so I think you should be ok, no problem. :)

Well that is good news lol.  do you think 5 strings is to heavy? or would using less hardly make a difference?

check out these guys. west penn hardwoods . com  (minus the spaces) i know they have 1/2" by 1/2" by i think 6" pen turning blanks. theyve got them in all sorts of exotic hardwoods, seems to me like they would be perfect for a fiew overlays. ive been to their warehouse many times, and theyve got quite a big selection of stuff. hope this helps.

i can get zebra,leopard, bubinga,blood, and several other exotic woods from the local lumberyard,however when i asked them
on getting me a board of osage orange like 1.5" thick by 12" wide by 7' long they looked at me like i had a booger hanging out my nose.
they had no idea what it was or what i was talking about.  go figure

I know this wood for handles. I saw it 2 weeks ago. Nice wood dark stripes in somewhat "khaki- coloured" wood.
Any experiences of making a complete bow of it?

Nomadic Pirate...those tips are outrageous. Thats what I'm talking about. Those look fantastic. You inspire me to go narrower.
Here I was worried that mine were too narrow.

Zebra wood is more expensive than Osage or Ipe by quite a bit. As for string, yes it would be worth the upgrade to FF. You can use artificial sinew just fine, but its like reading with a candle. Justin

i used zebra wood in my risers, but i think you're depriving the wood of i's natural beauty when you do that. as far as toughness, i think its almost exactily like padouk, hard to work with, easy to splinter, but beautiful. It looks great on nocks, especially if there long nocks, but i think the best way to use the wood is if you use veneers, it looks absolutley stunning, it might take away the primitive edge, but the looks are unbeatable. it also looks rally good with a purpleheart transition, thats my two cents. -jimmy
