Gut Backing?

knightd, over in the arrow section thread on gut just wrote:  "I was thinking about the fact you can get it anywhere and it is really long. maby a gut backing instead of a rawhide?"

Any ideas on this?

Gut's pretty strong, but shrinks alot (which, when exposed to moisture, could be trouble for your glue) as well as stretching a whole lot (meaning you would have to apply it pretty taught).

Taking those into consideration, I don't see why else it wouldn't work. Pretty strong stuff, and would probabaly work really well in an arid area.

Maybe even just "sleeve" the bow with gut and call it Sausage?!?!

I've seen mention of gut covered plains indian bows in at least two different books.  Not very pretty, but functional.   Ron
