Hazel Charecter Bow! (pics)

I found this log in the wood pile about a month ago, can remember it being cut down when i first got TBB1 but then realized it was way beyond my level of skill. So i worked up the courage and finally got round to it. It is 59" ntn and has 7 large knots and a hole in it! It pulls just under 50# at 28". I used wrap knocks as it took them quite thin. The knocks are 3/8th's wide and the center of the bow is 1 1/2" wide. I didn't toast the belly but i did make it slightly round, especially towards the tips. I finished it up with boiled linseed out and built up the handle with rawhide. (like in gordon's tutorial.) The bow has take about 1" set which is because of the tiller (too much bend in the handle.)

Oh and did i mention it had 30 degrees of prop twist in it too.

Yeah, thanks guys.

I reckon that if it makes full draw i'll be ok so i didn't want to mess it up or lose more weight. (came in 10lbs light)

Ha I'm impressed that you were even able to make a bow out of a mean looking piece of wood like that. R.C.

Thanks guys,

George- the wood is Hazel, but not whych hazel. Here in the uk it grows as shrubs mainly so even this bit was quite big.

Orcbow- It took me a while to gain the confidence, can't wait till i get another charecter bit. There a test and really nice. I'm on the lookout for a piece of real snaky wood.

The bow shoots well, it gives very little kick which is surprising considering the bendy handle. It isn't super quick but i'm happy with the speed.

This bow is primitive - which is what this site is all about. Very nice and bookmarked for Sept BOM, too.

Looks like you found a bow in a very challenging piece of wood. Great job!

Thanks, took me a while to find the bow though, a couple of years maybe. Now i got the other half to work on as a sister bow. Its got more character though.
