how do you split logs into staves?

See this topic here it has some info. I tend to use an axe to start then place spliting wedges along the length of the wood following the split. Some woods will split easily. Ie. ash. You should put wedges in from alternate sides of the log. The photos explain it better.

That link to Adam Kiepers osage harvesting adventure should tell you all you need to know. Just remember when splitting to start on the narrow end of the log so that you don't get too much runout and end up with a stave that is significantly narrower on one end than the other. I suppose as long as it is wide enough it might not matter, I just prefer to try and split them as uniformly as possible so as to get the maximum usable wood for my efforts.    Danny

There is a great article in the new issue of PA. on just that subject . Shows picking
the wood,splitting the wood and storing it. :) Pick one up at the news stand or better
yet subscribe and get it all the time. :)
