If a piece of wood that is 3"x9" weighs 3# what would the density be or sg.

That would be about 1.5 density, never heard of a wood that dense, are you sure it weighs 3#? Steve

Another way of looking at it is that would calculate to 96 lbs per cubic foot.  Osage is around 56 or so I think.

Maybe someone can double check my figures.
water 64# cubic foot
1728 cu" to  cubic foot.
3X9X2= 54cu inches    1728/54 =1/32 of a cubic foot
32X3#=96#/64#=1.5

You are right on steve.  Desert Iron wood is about 1.2 or so.

Ok I was asking because I got some hickory that is the heaviest ive ever put my hands on..the piece you just calculated is hart wood and it sinks in water..here is a piece of white sap wood lets see what it comes out to..13/4"x4"x13" weighs just over 4# just barely floats.. and yes its dry..
