I would guess the curves splinter some on the belly side even with boiling, and going through the process with thicker wood allows you to remove the splinters?

We tried boiling a hhb here a few weeks ago and putting in a pretty severe recurve, but it splintered pretty bad. We didn't have enough wood left to save it...the owner of the bow wanted to give it a try regardless, we warned him the result might be bad and it was.

Greg, I never splinter wood. 2 things that are crucial to bending statics are:

1. make sure your belly is on one growth ring. Any growth ring violation on the belly side will make it easier for splinter to raise.....as will rough wood. I make sure I have one contin ous ring on the belly and then smooth it out with sand paper prior to boiling.

2. Use a metal strap to support the belly while bending and clamping.

Do those 2 things and you will never splinter or crack.

Very nice job,it's a beauty,How long do you boil it ? We boiled the one Greg was talking about for about an hour.

Pappy, I boil my tips for 1 hour and 10 minutes. I bend them when they are 5/8" thick so that by the time I finish shaping and finish my static is 1/2" thick. Are you guys taking the steps above? Strap and belly growth ring?

I cannot bend staics with out those precautons......otherwise they crack. You could go lots thinner with the bend I siuppose but then would have to laminate a stiffner onto the belly. Thats where I call it not so selfbow anymore. This way you can retain selfbpw status...

In that first ash close up you can really see how thick it really is. like them stiff like that.

Steve, no we haven't taken the precaution of having the belly to one grain in the area to be bent...I can see how that would make a difference. We've played around a little with the band, but haven't got the process nailed yet.

Could you show us a picture of the banding part of the process and how you use it? I'd guess you have it secured to your form someway...

I sure will. I am headed out to the Great Lake Longbow Invatational this evening and wont be back till Monday. I will post up some pics then. Key with the strap is to make sure it really tight against the belly and do a nice slow bend so that the strap is compressing the belly as you go.

First off nice bow really is. I worked my first piece of Ash the other day haveing worked several pieces of Osage and beiing able to deflex/reflex gull wing them with no problem.Man I tried that with Ash I strapped it, one growth ring on the belly to boot ,and it still cracked .I didnt sand it smooth and steamed it .Do you actually boil the wood going to try again as soon as I get another piece of ash nice bow good job
