I brought a roughed out hickory stave to Twin Oaks this year. I wanted some advice and encouragement. You and Anthony provided both. I had never built a bow before, and this one had a large knot on the side of one limb. Your advice was to leave some extra wood around the knot and go for it.  I finally decided to jump in and either make a bow or kindling for the fireplace. All I used was a hatchet, drawknife, and scraper.
We've shot about a hundred arrows through it, so far so good. It's 65" nock to nock. and around 50# @ 26". It shoots pretty smooth with no hand shock that I can tell. I still have a little final sanding, and stain and sealing to do.  The stave was given to my son by a good friend for making Eagle Scout, so I really want it to last awhile. If not I gave it my best shot. I learned a lot while making this bow, I don't think there are any shortcuts you just have to go for it. Thanks to you and the folks at Twin Oaks for all the advice and knowledge.

Having a stave with sentimental value puts a little extra stress on the process.  Very nice work, and congrats on the boy making Eagle Scout.

Way to go, Allen! I bet you will have some nice self-nock arrows made up for it in no time... ;)

Looks like you did real well for a first-timer. I am working with a Scout Group this week myself. Great organization to support!

Thanks for the kind words guys. I just put on  the first coat of spar urathane over the walnut stain. After I get her sealed good I'll add a leather grip and strike plate.
I hope she holds together for my son I'd hate to put a knot on his head when he really doesn't deserve it . Yeah Chad, I have some cane and some ramin wood dowels just itching to shoot out of that bow. Now if I can just find the time to make them.

Very nice job Allen,I knew form seeing some of your other work [ cain arrows ] that you
wouldn't have any problems with a bow.You done that knotty stave proud. Now you are
hooked,so on to the next one. Be sure and post it when you get her all finished up. :)

I finally got her done. Nothing fancy, plain leather grip and side plate. Taylor chose the name " Serenity" for his bow, kind of a relaxing name I thought.I have some 5/16ths ramin wood arrows  that shoot pretty good out of her.
We have our last club shoot of the year tomorrow. I'm going to shoot a couple of rounds with "Serenity". If she holds up then I guess I can call her a bow. Thanks for all the encouragement and advice from all of you. Now I need to get another piece of wood and go learn some more.
