BBH Recurve ..
« on: July 21, 2008, 09:55:40 pm »
I finished this one yesterday.  It is a bamboo backed hickory, 53#@28".  62" ntn.  1 1/8" at fades, tapering down to 1/2" at tips.  The handle is Ipe, Osage, and Hickory, lip tip overlays are Osage.  When I glued this one up, I reflexed it at the handle. After tillering and shooting in the bottom of the recurves are just about even with back handle.  Recurves were steam bent.  First try at staining the bamboo with rit dye.  It turned out okay.  The bow shoots real well.  My 14 year old son Monroe has a birthday coming up on the 5th of December and he doesn't know it yet but this one is his.  I don't think I can wait until his birthday.   ;D  So he might get it tonight after I post this.  He is a very hard worker so the 53#@28" is not a problem for him.  I hope ya'll enjoy.  Here is the link to the pics.

You definitely have a talent for using dye, it is beautiful.  You have the same problem as me though.  I had the hardest time getting my first bows to bend in the fades. Luckily George kept reminding me that they needed more bend in the fades and I gradually got more and more bend there.  You have a bright future in bows, keep up the good work. Justin

Thank's Justin. on this one the hickory core is actually is thiner at the handle than it is at the fades so i didn't want to get it bending in the fades to much in fear of the handle trying to pop off. The reflex starts at the center of the handle so it's kind of strange looking in tiller. I glued this bow up 7yrs ago and it sat in the closet until a week ago when I decided to start tinkering with this style again. I will try and get the next a Little thicker in the mid section next time..

Happy (early :P) birthday to your son. This is a great candidate bow for July Laminate Bows of the Month.

Both of these bows are very nice, David. You have been cranking them out since you've been in NC.     Pat

Thank's pat.. I've  been fortunate enough to be able to work at home with my portable welder. It gives me enough time to get a lot done with my bow habit. ;D.. Looking forward to this weekend..
