Dick,  that was good thinking.  I didn't even go there.  I will probably try white oak again though.  The ring-pores are filled with a crystalline substance called tylosis or something like that, which red oak doesn't have, and which prevents the passage of water through the pores.  That's why white oak is used in boat building.
