Osage orange seeds
« on: March 09, 2025, 01:59:58 am »
I noticed a Osage fruit last fall while walking my dog. Today I noticed that it was dried up and could see the seeds so I picked it up and brought it home. At my age I don’t have time to try and grow a tree but thought maybe one of the younger guys on here might like to try it.
If you’re interested in some of them send me a message with your address and I’ll send some to you.
I’ve got about 50 to 75 seeds. Any takers?

I planted a lot of osage seeds over the years, I would let the apples rot down in a bucket over the winter, dig a shallow trench in the ealy spring and pour the seed slurry mush in the trench and cover it up. I think every seed sprouted, when the seedlings were a couple inches tall, I would transfer them to gallon pots. I let them grow for a year and weeded out any seedlings that were obviously crooked and twisted.

I tried planting them in my woods but they would only get a couple of feet tall and stop growing. I sold 20 of them to a friend years ago for a buck each, years later he said they were doing well and growing.

I found out later you could by a bundle of 25 bare root osage saplings from the Moussouri Department of Forestry for peanuts, they ship to other states. The current price is 70 cents each if you order between 25 and 75, shipping is $20. I had a friend who ordered a bundle of the bare root osage seedlings about 30 years ago, his grew well and he is probably cutting osage for bows now. For some reason he broke contact with me, I thought we were friends, this was 25 years ago.
