Compressed shafts at home?
« on: May 26, 2008, 02:38:09 am »
Is it practical to compress your own shafts?
I would like to compress 11/32 down to 5/16 and would welcome suggestions as to the best methods/tools.

Thanks

I know you can buy a block that has holes through it from 3 Rivers. You use a drill and push a shaft through one of the holes at the same time, I believe. It compresses the shafts.

I have reduced shafts using a hole gauge.
I pulled the shafts through successively smaller holes attached to a high speed drill.
When the edges of the holes are sharp they cut, when dulled they compress. If the holes reduce by 1/64th each time and the edges are rounded I think it would work.
