hi guys. i seem to recall seeing somewhere when i first got into this religion that you could make a VERY HIGH poundage takedown by just jambing two impala horns onto a whitled hardwood handle. has anyone els ever heard of this or anything like it? if you have one, post a pic of it please.

Yeah I've seen it too. It's in the first bowyers bible. Made something like 100 or 150 lbs. bow.

I think that would be a really cool bow to have but i could'nt think about pulling that back. I'd seperate my collar bone again. You know when they're broke you can't shoot real well.

the article is in the magazine a few years back. Basicly it was good for hanging on the wall. It was heavy, heavy draw weight, and low cast. With the price of horns and work involved it seemed like it wasn't worth it to me.

If you have to pull the trigger, is it really archery?

i think i could draw it, but like you said, it would be basicly for showing off. i'd stick to my good ole hickory bows for hunting.

I'll go through some back issues and find the article for you. Then you can order the issue,

the bows are made out of oryx horns or Gemsbok. i make and sell these bows, have for a while now. an un-tillered gemsbok bow can easily get up to 140 even 165 draw weight but they can be tillered down some what easily. i am working on a design for a 1/2 gemsbok horn takedown bow right now.
here is a pic of a gemsbok bow i made...i will try and get pics of some of the other unique gemsbok bows later.
the bow in the picture was about 130 at 26" before working with it...in the picture it was about 80#@28"

you simply have to file it it basically, in between the the natural bumps on the horn. and mainly mid limb. you can do it with file belt sander etc...pretty straight forward. better the leave the tips(6in or so) pretty stiff.
