Sounds of density. What does your wood sound like???

Hey gang.  Funny little post here.  What does your bow stave sound like?  Now I know that this is t scientific or anything but I believe it’s an indicator of density.  The Osage is super dense and sounds like a bell!  Here’s some short video clips of yew, Osage and hickory.  I could have posted some others but I think you bet the idea.  Crank the volume.

you should try cutting your staves in half and see how they sound

for DIY, I wonder what could be done with small wood samples of a consistent length, width and thickness,  something like a xylophone key but all the same length.

Not sure how the sound of it is related to the speed of sound in the material, but there’s definitely something there! I appreciate the observation. At the very least we can all gather in a circle with our staves around a fire and chant “OOGA BOOGA” to the beautiful sound.

thats why they use certain woods for baliphone or xylephone,, they have the best sound

If you drop say 6-8 staves of about the same size . You can tell the more dense staves also. Takes some practice. Best dropped on concrete.

When I'm working on a stave or at least at floor tiller stage I will tap it with my finger and listen for the sound. Dry wood has a ringing sound and not dry wood has more of a thud sound. Each wood had a different sound but dry wood rings, wet wood thuds. Not a scientific practice but it works pretty well for me. The sound of rasping and scraping also can be an indicator.

Yes I’ve noticed this with one of my Osage staves actually.  It’s a bit chunky and has extra bits to be trimmed off yet but I think that it is still retaining moisture compared to the others I have.
