Black locust 60# at 28”
« on: October 06, 2023, 01:11:44 pm »
Here’s a black locust bow I made at a walk back in Time event recently. I couldn’t shoot while there so I could get up to the point of shooting in there but had to shoot in and tweak a bit once I got home. The roughed out bow got handled by LOTS of school kids that came through to learn.

The tree the stave came from had a punky core and the evidence of that shows in the discoloration on the belly in spots. So I decided to to heat treat to reduce stress on the limbs a little. I got about 1” total set with the lower limb having some knots causing a bit of extra deflex. The limbs are 2” wide from the fades to midlimb and has a double taper from midlimb to the tips being about 3/8” at the nocks. The overlays are desert iron wood and very hard. The handle wrap is stamped 5/6oz Herman oak leather, stitched with a single strand lacing braid. The handle wrap bumps up to the edge of the shelf to add a little useable width. It’s not a speed demon shooting 550gr arrows around 150fps. but should be quite stabile over time.

Thanks for looking

Kyle

Last batch

I wasn’t working in this bow in the picture, I had moved onto roughing out a Honey Locust ELB, but it shows the setup

Clean lines! Love that profile. 150fps will get the job done just fine.

Thanks,It’s one of my favorite profiles to work. May not be the fastest but it sure is stabile, and looks good. I agree, it’s plenty of performance. Especially since I was maybe hitting 27” when shooting through the chronograph.

Looks very nice.  I like the natural wood finish it has.  That leather work on the handle is very cool.

Thanks guys.
It was great to see how many people were interested and curious about the wood bows. Especially the little kids, though they were more curious why I was wearing a skirt and standing bearfooted in the shavings.
I already sent it off and can’t remember exactly. But 28” limbs, 3” fades, 4” handle and 1” past the nocks, so 68” tip to trip

Nice bow Kyle. I like that fancy leather grip.

Thank you sir. I’ve been playing with leather a lot lately and figured I’d try incorporating stuff I’ve been learning into my bows. I’m gonna have to try scenic tooling at some point on these grips. But I really like how the lacing braid turns out for how simple it is.

Nice work Kyle. That sounds like an interesting event too. To bad you couldn’t shoot your bow there, but still pretty cool

Beautiful looking bow! The "punky" belly looks real pretty, like some kinda birth mark.
I am a fan of Black Locust, great bow wood.

Great looking bow!  I love the profile and the leather handle wrap. Black locust makes a great selfbow. Very nice work!
