You guys that were at the Hickory Shoot this weekend saw this stave in person. I'm building a bow for Herb Reynolds 8), the founder of CTA, and I bought this stave at the shoot. I knew I could get 2 staves out of it but with my planets aligned correctly I got 3 beautiful staves from the original chunk. With the tools pictured, and a great piece of wood, it all came together...or came apart, as it were. ;D The piggyback(belly split) came off clean without violating it's back. Then I separated the two sisters. These staves are 70" long and check out them rings! :o 8)   Oh, if they all could work out like this did!!! 8)    Pat

   Well when you start getting cocky, with all those nice bows you have been turning out, you just forgot to make a donation to the bow- god. Well you made up for it last week so you should be good to go for a few years more. ;D ;)

David, I have had piggyback staves pop loose clean but not very often. Usually you have to remove a partial ring or two...sometimes you get fire wood!. :'( This stave was very straight grained with good sized annual rings. I believe that, and being fresh cut wood, is why it split so well. 8)

 Eddie, I'm glad to hear my Karma bank account is full. Wish my regular bank account was in the same shape. ::)

Dano, Dana, Gordon and Radius, Thanks guys. Herb is a special person to trad archery, and especially in NC and I consider him a special friend. It will be an honor to build this bow for him...so Dano, I hope the karma holds out long enough to get Herb's bow done.
   The wood was cut the 8th of May. Yep, just a few weeks ago so it has some drying to do first. By reducing the stave like I have should speed it up too. When I come up with the design, I'll reduce the stave to floor tiller stage and put it in the hot box for a while. I'll keep ya'll posted about the progress.    Pat

I bet that nice lookin froe had something to do with them splitting out nice too.
