Far from primitive but still all wood
« on: May 06, 2023, 04:39:52 pm »
Just finished up this takedown. The Osage and hickory was milled out of logs I got from Mr Osage outlaw. The Walnut is from a lumber yard. Hickory backed with tapered Walnut core with a quarter sawn Osage belly. Glued up with g-flex. The riser I made previously for a set of fiberglass limbs. 66" overall /49@28. Thanks for looking

Fantastic! It’s funny we don’t see more like this, especially with hickory or even boo backings. I’ve seen a number of “hack job” attempts at a bow like this but none that have pulled it off like you did. Great work!

Very nice Paul.

those are some beautiful profiles.

I bet that draws really smooth.

I’ve always wanted to make one.

Beautiful job Paul! Could you tell us more about the walnut core backing? I have never heard of it?

It's just a tri lam. The hickory backing is about .09 in thick. The Walnut is the middle lam which is .08 at the butt end and tapers down to .04 at the tips. I did the taper with a piece of sandpaper glued to a heavy flat piece of wood. Just took my time and constantly checked it with calipers. I ended up doing that out of fear of running out of belly material.

Nice rig, buddy. Hard to beat the performance of this type of bow. And, you can make all the various limbs you want.
