A board bow for Jawge

I split this board-stave out of a Osage plank my cousin sawed on his mill. I chased a ring on it and followed the side grain from end to end.

I know I have pictures somewhere showing how I split it a posted asking if it was a board or a stave? I can’t find it anywhere though.

I remember George saying it was a board bow and that’s how you should try to make one if you can.

It’s been hanging from it’s knot hole in my shop for several years now.

Every time I look at it I think of George. I guess because he has helped so many people with their board bows.

For some reason I really got the urge to work on this board stave earlier this winter and got it shooting shortly before George left us.

Still finishing it up yet but took some pictures today.

My first board bow. Thanks for the help Jawge. It shoots really nice.

Anything but straight as a board. This one has some real character traits that made it a bit of a challenge.

Thanks Stix. I want to say that I posted the profiles on this one before it was prettied up and George said he liked the braced profile but I might be mixing it up with a different one.

I’m certain that he would have had something nice to say about it.

Beautiful work on the bow and a great tribute. I love the nocks, going to have to try the multiple laminated woods on my next bow.

mmattockx just give it a try. I like to use pretty dense wood. These tips actually have three different woods. I don’t know what they are . I got them in a giveaway on the leatherwall site. There isn’t much left of the third type. I like pretty small tips so it can be hard to keep everything. I have cut them at a angle before to keep all the different woods

Thanks Bob. I never got to meet George. So many people I would like to meet yet. Hope to cross paths with you sometime too.

I just did what I always do. I looked for the bow and followed the grain.

I can’t seem to find my pictures of splitting this one but I will try to illustrate where in the log this board came from.

My cousin clamped it in his mill and sawed all the boards he could get for himself off one side. Until he was to close to his clamps to saw another pass.

Then I had him flip it over and saw as many for himself as he could from the other side.

I kept the plank in the middle.  I don’t remember exact measurements but the width of the log wide. And approximately 2.5” thick.

You can see in drawing the general orientation of the grain. It really was a pretty nice straight Osage log.

From the plank I made two splits to remove the stave from my board. Then I chased a ring. And then I followed the edge grain to lay out my staves width.

And that is where this snaky wop-T- do board bow came from
