Asymmetric bow arms

How do you make asymmetric arms work and why do you want to make them?

I've heard that the Yumi bows were tillered as 3 separate bows working together as one and the reason for their short lower limb was for horse archery when needed. I'd like to hear from someone that has studied the Yumi bows more though.
