Vine Maple Bow
« on: December 11, 2022, 04:52:29 pm »
Hello all,

I have never posted one of my bows here. I've been a fan of the site for a while. I got into bow making about six months ago and have made six or seven functioning bows. This is one I made for my dad. He's in his 70's and pulling a hunting weight bow is difficult due to nerve damage in his hand. It's 30#@ 30". I thought this might be a cool gift for Christmas.

I stained the front and back with iron chloride. I took my inspiration from methods I saw on Stonehill Primitive Bows. The pattern is just shellac (to shield from the iron chloride) then painted with acrylic. I finished with True Oil. I think it turned out pretty well. Tips are deer antler. Arrow plate is my first attempt at an inlay with abalone like shell. I added a rest to make it easier to shoot for the old man. There is a bit of set, and the tips are a bit stiff (still learning). I just wanted to post this here and see what anyone thought. Thank you for any input or pointers in advance.

30# at 30" will be a great shooter.
I like the bow.
Good to see a new poster.

That's great, I bet he'll really love that.  Great looking pattern on the back.  Well done.

I like it!  I personally like stiff tipped bows.  Is that a slight hollow limb I see on this bow?

Yes I attempted to hollow out the limbs. It wasn’t too drastic and seemed to go well. I definitely took my time with it.

I really like the stain job. You did a good job. A bow you should be proud to gift to your father. What a great Christmas present.

That looks awesome.  The paint sort of reminds me of a Badly Bent bow a bit - very artistic, seemingly random and natural but very thoughtfully applied.

Personalized self bow for Christmas. Great gift! I always find those smaller diameter staves harder to work but can make very nice shooters. Looks good.
