Deer legs for pouches
« on: March 19, 2022, 08:20:27 am »
For those interested. Here's some deer legs just salted heavily or pickled/dried/softened and oiled with neats foot oil. Then sewn together and more than pliable enough for pouches.

Thanks fellas.I'll have to sew some leather to it to complete the project.Might make some belt loop type pouches.
The deer leg leather thickness is just right for pouches.

Ed,

We must be operating in the same universe.  I have been experimenting with the hides from deer legs that I have extracted the tendons from for sinew backed bows.  I have salted them but have not softened them with oils.  The end result is hair covered rawhide which I intended to use on bow handles.  I have left the back toes on a couple with the idea maybe incorporating them on the handle covers as arrow rests.  I am not sure if this has been attempted in the past.

Thanks for sharing your post.

That's a creative idea.Do you mean the dew claws?Sometimes I feel I was born in the wrong century...ha ha.
To get them pliable enough for use pickling them or aluminum sulphate mixture soak will cure them good. You can do that while green or after they've dried and the hair is set.
While they are drying work them till dry while massaging in neats foot oil. They'll be piliable enough then for a bag.
I would'nt use oil if your going to glue them onto the handle of a bow though.

Hi Ed. I am not familiar with the term dew claws but guess that they are what I am probably incorrectly calling the "back toes".  I imagine that Reindeer would use them to scratch through the dew to get to vegetation.  Being partly Finnish, I should know this.

That's the way I've always heard them described.
I make wind chimes out of them too.I used these in my tipi.
I keep extra around for other projects.

Here's other deer legs used as pouches.A muzzle loaders' shooting pouch and a draw closure possibles bag pouch.

Again with more beadwork.

I've got some elk legs I'll make into a pouch also which will naturally make a bigger pouch.

The good thing about these items is it can be shown there is value in parts many throw away.I am guilty myself for not utilizing everything I can off a deer.
