Møllegabet Elm - 50#@27" 65"ntn
« on: March 14, 2022, 02:41:29 pm »
Hey Guys,
I decided to deinstall the penobscot cause how ever I tried to gain draw weight the speed wasnt astonishing. Maybe its the penobscot molle desgn or even the double bow principle itself. However I gave that Elm an intense Heat Treat, new horn tips, really thin levers and a little sanding. also 2 new smaller bandages.
The result was 50#@27 and 176fps with a 480gn arrow.

Another ting that confuses me is my chrony. It showed 3 or for times around 60Mps thats like 195fps. I doubt that numbers but could it be possible? the chrony was always straight and full opened. IDK I think it shows reall weird numbers sometimes so what could that cause?
Thanks for commenting.

As always a little funny clip of my work and detailed pictures:

Cool...Does it shoot faster now than as a penobscot bow?Decent speed for that bow.I usually use a 10 grain arrow to compare bows to each other.
You have to know your chronograph.A 19 fps jump at the same draw is'nt right.A 460 grain arrow @ 50#'s might get you to 195fps.
With mine when I get consistently or close to same speed shots I know it's right.

no same arrow every shot 480gn and yes its much faster than it was a penobscot - when it was a 68# penobscot it shot like 176fps with that arrow. now 50lbs and same speed but one soft and one intense heat treating. so my conclusion is - the penobscot concept it not worth it, at least in this form with a Molle and a small bow attached.
Maybe a recurve mainbow can go faster but... I dont think very much

Cool about the transformation of your bow.I think those penobscot type bows were demographically advantageous for the type of wood they had in their area. They still got the job done and have their place in archery.
I had my chronograph flash a 210 fps reading before.I disregarded that number. An abrupt jump like that is'nt right.A glitch I call it.Can't really tell you why it does it either.Maybe the arrow goes through a different part of the shooting lane or the arrow paradoxes more I could'nt tell you.
I see your tiller is eliptical mostly or holmgaardish.Mine are too when their is more working limb length than lever.
Very nice bow.

Rowan.

I had issues with my orig chrono and replace it as it was doing the same thing you are seeing with some inconsistency in readings.  My orig one was a Caldwell.  I hated it.  It seemed temperamental too.  I switched to pro chrono brand and now I’m good.  Not all chronos are equal.  What brand are you using

Btw I love your bow.  I love the molle design.

Cheers

Penobscot bows were 'invented' by a white fella who turned indian...the weird bows were part of his 'show'. Think about it...why would a tribesman make two bows when one is better....much better!

Ahhh yes the old Wabanaki bow.It can be said it is a version of the cable backed bow too.
According to research the Mi'kmaq people of the southeastern woodlands of Canada used these bows invented by them long before Chief Big Thunder alias Frank Loring showed it in his circus.

the brand is "chrony" It also has defusers for sunny days but mostly it counts better without them. I made a lots of shots at the end of the video before the outro

Looks like you got some room to shoot distance in your pictures.
It's another way of testing performance.

I watched your video.Especially the end of it shooting through the chrono.I saw a lot of 52 to 54 meters per second shots mostly which translates to lower to mid 170's fps.A bow that should shoot at least 200 yards or more with a 10 grain arrow.
Any bow that'll shoot that distance is an outstanding bow.
I just tested a bow here a while ago.Stating everything that's needed to know.Draw weight/draw length/grain weight of arrow using same arrow/and string weight.I had a person spot for me too while shooting to be sure my draw length was consistent. The range of speeds while shooting varied around 3 fps over 5 shots.
I'm totally confident of my findings here doing things this way then.
