Good backing for erc?
« on: February 03, 2022, 10:22:29 am »
Got a nice erc stave from some locals here in Louisville. I’m already in the process of a short sinewbacked recurve but wanted something longer. Can hickory and or bamboo be used to back this stave effectively? I figure hickory might be to harsh but if I thinned it some it may work

Hickory or boo would be OK. You could make the hickory a bit thinner if it concerns you. Rawhide will also work but sinew is probably the best option for a shorter recurve bow.

a thin hickory backing...like 1/8" will work and be less likely to over stress the belly than bamboo...I've tried/used both.  Pat is right...sinew is likely the best backing.
Seems like common sense isn't very common any more...
