Viking-themed bows
« on: October 21, 2021, 09:01:16 pm »
Hi everyone,

I've started to build bows when I was sixteen, and then I picked up this activity again recently.

I'm a hobby bowyer from Italy and I recently made a viking short bow and a viking longbow.

I will attach some pictures to showcase them, any advice is very welcome :)

Welcome to PA :)
Is that made from rattan?
tillerwise it has a bit too much bend in the middle and not enough mid to outer limbs. Nice pyrography work.

I made it out of cane wood, which is basically a relative of rattan. They both draw 40~ lbs at 28". The longbow is 170 cm long strung, the shortbow 130.
The finish is done with two coats of boiled linseed oil and the strings are made of linen (longbow) and dacron (shortbow).
Both very fun to shoot.

Yep, cane wood, "giunco" in Italian. It is a very close relative of Rattan. It is the only wood available at the moment. I need to harvest some logs to turn into staves but at the moment it's good ole exotic wood.

Indeed, I was aware of the tillering but I wanted to keep it chunky and bendy as I named it after a snake-like creature from Norwegian folklore and unfortunately it was a bit of a tradeoff to leave it a solid, particular look.
