One evening, when my daughter was about 4 or 5, we were following a fairly complicated set of directions through a farming area. Mrs. Badger said to turn west, so I did. I asked my daughter if she knew how to tell we were going west. She said, "'Cause if we weren't going west, we'd be going somewhere else." (words to live by, right there) I had to agree, but then I told her about sunset, and how, in the evening, the sun will be in the west. She listened very politely, then said, "Yeah, plus, West is probably gonna look more cowboy-like."
