Kindergarten Logic
« on: October 05, 2021, 11:00:34 am »
A couple of recent scenes from my music classes:

Friday, we're at the parade, and a vulture is flying overhead.
Kindergarten boy: "Look, everybody, a buzzard! A buzzard!"
Me: "Yep, that's a turkey vulture."
Classroom teacher: "That is what we call a synonym!"
Kinder: "No, it's called a buzzard!"

First grade music class yesterday, we are learning about musical symbols.
Me, picking up a yardstick and pointing at the board: "OK, what is this?"
Five first graders: "A big ruler!"

These are the stories I tell people when they ask how my day went.  ;D ;D ;D

I work in a grammar school. Not as a Teacher but as a Janitor. The stories I could tell, I should write a book. Enjoyed your post about the yard stick. Take care and keep on smiling.

Ah yes...small people are funny.  My wife teaches elementary music part-time, so I get to hear lots of good ones!

My wife was playing The Stars and Stripes Forever for her 4th graders yesterday.  She said it was the national march and was by John Philip Sousa.  One girl asked, "Is that why they named the tuba after him?"  (Yes, this is probably only funny for musicians...)

When my son was four years old he asked "Daddy, why does it rain?" He listened very attentively to my explanation of the cycle of evaporation, nucleation, condensation and precipitation, in terms that I hoped he would understand. When I had finished he said "No Daddy, it rains because plants need a drink."

One evening, when my daughter was about 4 or 5, we were following a fairly complicated set of directions through a farming area.  Mrs. Badger said to turn west, so I did.  I asked my daughter if she knew how to tell we were going west.  She said, "'Cause if we weren't going west, we'd be going somewhere else."  (words to live by, right there)  I had to agree, but then I told her about sunset, and how, in the evening, the sun will be in the west.  She listened very politely, then said, "Yeah, plus, West is probably gonna look more cowboy-like."

My 4 year old Granddaughter was arguing with my son. She looked at him very seriously and said, "your going to have to learn to get along with me."
