Bamboo source
« on: June 11, 2021, 01:11:04 pm »
A place near Collinwood TN just posted bamboo for sale in the Facebook Market place for $5 a pole. I sent a message to see what was the biggest they have, I can see what looks like Mosa and Mandake in the pictures they posted.

I think that is Mosa in the back and Madrake in the foreground, Madrake has very wide node spacing.

If anyone lives close by and is interested in checking it out I can PM you the link to the ad.

It may not be big enough but so far it looks good.

They got back to me, they are located in downtown Collinwood and said to come take a look and said they would cut what ever you needed, they said they have stuff bigger than 4".

I have their address if you want to take a look.

That wide node Madrake sure looks good if they have any big stuff, here is their patch;

Eric,
In your experience what diameter of bamboo pole works best for backings?

The bigger the better with 4" being the minimum, if you go too small by time you flatten the belly of the slat it might only be an inch wide.

I prefer mine 6" and up at the butt, the bigger it is the more 6ft cuts you can get out of a trunk, on big stuff you can often get 3 or 4 cuts.

That massive stuff grows down here.  That stuff can be treacherous to cut by yourself when the base gets 6”, plus.

I have some growing behind the shop but the larger stalks only have about a 4” base.
