Yellow Poplar...Bow wood ?
« on: May 12, 2008, 12:41:05 am »
I used to make stuff out of yellow poplar when I lived in S.Carolina.I loved working with it.It was straight grained and pretty strong, not real dense like oak or hickory though.Anyone ever tried making a bow with it ?  Frank
(P.S. I got a coon hunting story with a yellow poplar in it.)

This comes up about once a year, not recomended for bow wood but I have made many poplar bows, some of the fastest self bows I have ever seen were made from poplar. It has been know to explode without warning but the last time I checked nearly any wood bow has been known to do that. Steve

Too soft. I wouldn't bother. Makes good arrows, however.

I've seen Steve's Poplar bow shoot, and it's very fast. Poplar is one of these woods where the highly skilled bowyer can make a faster bow out of the right piece then the average bowyer can out of any wood including the bamboo backing.. ;)
