Flat or rounded back for sinew recurve?
« on: May 24, 2021, 10:43:54 pm »
Howdy everyone,
I’ve never built a sinew bow before and had a question relating to the back profile. I am building a 57” hickory recurve that started life from a board. I’m getting ready to sinew the bow and have the option to make the back any profile I want before I add sinew. Is there any advantage to gently rounding the back of the bow to work the sinew more as compared to a flat back?  Any other ideas/opinions on the back profile of sinew bows?
Thanks!

I would think a crowned back would elevate the sinew above the neutral plane more and so make it do more work.

Rounded with the sinew crowned on down the middle. One thin layer to cover it all but all the rest down the middle.
