First Vine Maple / First D-bow (w/ pics)
« on: May 07, 2008, 11:55:49 pm »
I finally finished my latest bow - started this in March.  It's my first time working with vine maple and my first time making a D-bow.
I got this piece of vine maple from the very generous Joe Klink (aka the Cherry Bark Pimp).
The first picture is of the freshly debarked, roughed and dried stave.
The bow measures 57 1/2" tip to tip, draws 53 lbs. @ 26".  It bends slightly through the handle.
It shows little to no string follow after resting.  It is 1 1/2" @ mid-limb to 5/8" at the tip.
The finish is American Walnut Dye faded to natural at the tips w/ 6 coats of tru-oil.

Very nice. Tiller looks great. I really like the faded in dye job. The tips look like antler tips in the sun. Great job.

Okay Gordon - he's coming after you. Super job on the tiller, Rick. And bookmarked for May Self Bow of the Month, too.

Rick,

All I can say is WOW WOW WOW!  You absolutely nailed the tiller on that bow; the arc is flawless!!!  Awesome Job!  It took me 6 bows to nail the tiller and it took you only one!  I love how the VM can give you so much character yet so much performance at the same time.  I'll be sending you three more staves on Saturday like I promised.

Congrats again on such a sweet bow!  You have my vote!

Joe

Thanks for all the compliments everyone.  I really liked working w/ the VM. It makes such a wicked light bow.  This one is less than 14 oz.  Thanks again for the wood Joe.
