Bow length?
« on: January 11, 2021, 06:09:06 pm »
I'm making a Sugar Maple R/D bow, #40 @30". The fellow has requested that it be 70" long (l didn't ask him why). It sounds too long (sluggish) to me. Suggestions for dimensions? length and width. I'll be heat treating it.

The longer it is the less wide it can be but that width might be helpful for stability. I wouldn’t go shorter than 66” depending on how long you’re making the handle and fades. I’d keep it wide, around 2” to start, parallel to mid limb and then taper to the nocks.

He read some were maybe here that 2 times your draw length plus 10 for bow length in inches. Since Covid I built a 66 inch Hickory ,68 inch Hickory, 70 inch white Oak, and 70 inch Elm in longer bows for target shooting. At my not quite 26 inch draw they feel longer than they need to be, but draw smooth and shoot good. They are in the 38 to 42 lb range. 70 inches 40 lbs 30 inch draw should make him a nice shooting bow.

Just make the riser really long and the limbs shorter.
