backed wrong side!!
« on: January 09, 2021, 01:53:29 pm »
Has anyone been stupid enough to back the wrong side of a limb? I used Gorilla Wood Glue and burlap. Any removal suggestions?

Heat might work. Contact Gorilla Glue tech support. They will give you the answer. That's how I found out about TBIII breaking down at 150 degrees.

Good advice Pat. Making my daughter's boyfriend a hunting bow after a 4-5 year lay-off from building. I even told myself to watch what side I backed the day before I actually screwed it up! Getting old I guess.

Sand it off with coarse paper.  What sort of belly does this bow have that no hints were detected that it was the wrong side?

4" grider with a sanding disc on it. Wood/power planner, 6ft belt sander.

Since nobody is giving you grief, I will.

I want some of what you were smoking!

That is all I can muster, as I haven't been doing this long enough to make that mistake yet.  I don't think I will make that mistake, but I also know that I've never made a mistake that I thought I would make.

How is it possible to back wrong side :)? And if its done then why is it wrong side. I have made good shooters with every direction of belly wood grain. I would like to see pic.

BJ, that just makes areal nice bow for a person who shoots from that side!  Send me in, Coach :BB (SH) (lol)!  It is possible to correct that slight error, as I did (with help) on "Transdex" the bow I was gifted by Badger.  Still shoots pretty good!

I removed a backing of cotton fabric and TBIII by carefully using my belt sander to get the bulk of it, then a block and coarse paper to finish. It certainly will provide penance for your mistake as it is a tedious job that requires care lest you wreck a bow in the making.

Don't feel bad, Chasing Crow, we have all done things like this even if some don't want to admit it. On my first recurve I realized afterwards that one recurve turned up, one turned down. I think it is that as new builders we get in a hurry and are not concentrating or are distracted. As long as we learn from our mistakes we are ahead of the game.  :OK

I just read me your kind replies. Yes, not too swift. But it is the first bow I've built blindfolded! Cheers!

I cut the string nocks on the wrong side once. You are not alone. On the plus side, it will be easy to remove with a little heat, the glue will weaken and the burlap will pull right off.
