osage back checks.. problem??
« on: December 09, 2020, 06:07:46 pm »
I steamed in some curves, the back was sealed with shellac, so I didn't think It would check... but it did when set it next to the wood stove  for a few days. I'm going to sinew this bow. Will those cracks be a problem? they kinda run off because there at the tip of the bow... I could possibly chase a ring lower, its about half inch thick. Thanks

The answer is "maybe", superglued and sinew backed I wouldn't expect a problem but if you can get rid of the drying checks by going down a ring I would.

About 25 years ago I put a nice stave behind a water heater that was sitting in the corner to dry it out a bit more. It checked much like your stave did. I learned the same lesson by putting a stave in a hot car and hot attic to speed up drying, bad idea.

These cracks have never effected any osage bow I have made with back cracks up the limbs. No need to even back it.

Unless there are runoff checks you shouldn't have to worry. Just fill them with super glue. The check at the tip could be a problem but not necessarily a deadly one.

You may have to put a wrap on the one that runs off. Start just past the runoff and wrap about 1" back. You could do a temporary one until the tillering is done then remove it then and add a permanent one.
