Hickory backed black walnut ELB
« on: November 26, 2020, 04:16:17 pm »
Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Just completed this hickory backed black walnut English longbow inspired by an ash backed walnut warbow made by Kviljo years ago. 70” ntn and 43#@28”. Took about an 1” of set on the upper limb. Was definitely a challenging build as it took set asymmetrically. The tiller is definitely not totally symmetrical but this was strategic due to the differences in the limbs. Finish was pretty quick considering the flaws and possibility that the rounded belly may fail in compression after some time. I’ll be making another similar bow next so this was kind of a warm up. Was fun doing horn nocks for the first time and a horn inlayed arrow pass. Thanks for looking.

Cool bow and the horn nocks are very nice. For me, the horn nocks were the toughest part of building an ELB.

Very nice work on a tough combination. I recently finished a longbow with the same Hickory backing and Walnut core and went wide and flat and had one pin knot cause chrysals on the belly.
I was extremely careful with the tiller but think I left the backing at 1/8" too thick. Looking at your bow though, it looks like the backing is close to that? I have another one glued up and haven't yet done any work except the rough profile. How wide are you at the handle and is the taper straight to the tips? Is the belly a true rounded  ELB? You built a beauty for sure, and I'm hoping my next one will turn out well.  My first bow did shoot extremely well, but the chrysals will be its doom I think.

Nice bow. What width/depth did you use at the handle?
