I’ve never tried, but I think guys have used natural pigment mixed with hide glue?

I think as far as modern paints and rawhide pretty much anything goes. I’m pretty sure a bunch of guys use acrylic.

I have only made one backed bow. A ash bow backed with rawhide. I used a set of magic markers. Probably not the best choice, but seems to have worked.

Acrylic craft paint from Wal Mart or other big box stores or art/craft stores works very well and you get a full pallet of colors and it cleans up with water. I've used it quite a few times with success.

Fiebings leather dye works great on rawhide-backed bows. I use it on all my rawhide backings.
