Leave the back... pick out any loose stuff from the belly, dig in hard and make sure you are down to sound wood. It may come right through to the back as a tiny hole... which is quite handy, as you'll be able to see the epoxy /yew dust mix squeeze out
If it's a big hole, whittle a Yew plug and glue it in with epoxy mixed with yew dust.
Smaller holes can be filled with epoxy and Yew dust, I put a little in first and make sure it's pushed well in to wet the surfaces, then I mix more dust to make a dryish mix and tamp it in... as it is tamped in, it sort of becomes wetter and squeezes out the epoxy (if that makes sense).
If you don't fill 'em it can cause a pinch where the manky stuff collapses under compression.
