Can't speak about anything but red osier, it works both by stripping and leaving 3-4" end bark, and by leaving the bark on. Be sure to bind and straighten regularly while curing with either method -trust me on that! Cut way longer to get the best shoots, heat bend to straighten, and cross your fingers. A huge gas grill will heat up a whole shaft or you can use a gas stove and work the shaft slowly.
