Does ERC sapwood bend into recurves easily? Maybe compare it to Yew if you can.

It's a juniper and I've seen juniper recurves. I've never tried to bend ERC.

I tried.... first recurve went ok... the second one steamed the same amount of time and it totally exploded, not warning, no little splinter... just POP. so maybe steam a really long time? I've also tried dry heat, it didn't move at all with that.

I've done a few. No problem if you follow the 'rules'

Definitely use steam. Dry heat is a no no with erc.

I got a stave I am going to recurve and sinew back.. I will boil it for 15 minutes per 1/4 inch.. make sure water is boiling before starting timer though... do bend quick as you can all at once... I put a metal strap on belly to help to not lift a splinter .. boiling even longer is not necessary and wont hurt either.. my last recurve I blew on curve by not making sure water was boiling before I set timer... still kicking myself for that one... now I won't dry heat a recurve.. but I have flip tips with dry heat on ERC and it worked fine... gut

Getting the water to boil before starting the timer is a good tip. Make sure you have plenty of water too. I recently scorched the back of a hackberry bow by boiling it dry, even though I "know better"...those mistakes seem to hurt for a while.
