Maple and Hickory Bow Finished Today
« on: October 16, 2020, 07:31:46 pm »
I glued up this bow about two weeks ago and finished it today after work.  I've been on a quest to make the best bow I can from things I find at the local home improvement store.  This bow is hard maple from a 1x2x72 board and a 1/8" hickory slat cut from another 1x2x72 board.  I cut the limbs of the maple core to rough thickness, and then glued up the bow with about 2" of reflex.  The bow finished 66" long, 50#@27", and has a bit of reflex left after tillering and ~400 shots.  The string is a 14 strand made from 452X and the nocks are thin enough that I only cut a groove on the front.  The tip overlays and handle are a piece of tropical hardwood that I found in a bin of odds and ends for wood turning.  I am pretty happy with this one and I think it is the best bow I have built to date in terms of shooting out of at least a hundred.  Going to try the same formula again with the next one, but maybe 64" long.

Matt

Nice bow. Looks like you are drilling that 3-d buck. The coyote is hurting to.

I've been absent for a spell and am getting back into building a few bows and this exact combination is on my list. You did a fine job with this one - it's a beauty!
