bows being finished
« on: April 30, 2008, 07:11:08 am »
my camera's going to get some use soon. i currently have 4 (or is it 5?) bows in various degrees of near completion, and i can't wait to show them off. one i'm  particularly proud of, is named "cyclops", and is my first ever character bow! my son (20 yrs old, and an archer!) commented, correctly, that as recently as a year ago, i wouldn't even have tried to make a bow out of the stave that became cyclops. this is a lot of fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i was talking to my son tonight, and he said he and his cousin were looking at his bow and they heard a single "tick" when the cousin  drew his bow, and since then, i have heard several. the long and the short of that is that one of my soon to be finished bows may not be long for this world! bummer for me, and bigger bummer for my son. oh well, i'll start another when it becomes necessary. i'll still post that bow along with the others when the pics get taken. by the way, my son's bow is red oak (my first of that wood) backed with hemp cord. (that was a time consuming project)

the vital statistics are.... she's black locust, 37#@28". this my first attempt at a character bow, and i'm suprised at how well it came out. she is smooth at draw and shoots very well, and draws well out to 30" and more(i tested her because of my nephew with the long draw!!!) this is also my first bend in the handle bow, and it won't be the last! i will be posting more pics in coming days and weeks, since i have 5 or 6 bows in the works, including a 6ft 9in bow that i'm building just for the heck of it!!! still trying to decide what weight to shoot for, but it will be high!!

with the little bit its been shot so far, it looks like it soes very well, if i do my part! that said, i'm in the process of making some that are more properly spined for that weight of bow. the arrows i've been shooting have been more properly suited for something in the 55 to 70 lbs. range.

finally! some pics of full draw. the tiller's off, but with the 'character' i figured i'd best stop with 'shootable'. it does shoot very well .
