Silly sinew and erc questions...
« on: August 23, 2020, 07:54:09 pm »
Does the act of sinew drying pull bows into reflex? Or do you heat the reflex In first then apply sinew?  And at what stage do you sinew back said bow?  Im ruffing out a ERC stave to back .. thanks

lots of variations to your guestions,,
I will try,,
sinew will pull reflex into a bow
some do heat in reflex and then apply sinew
some string backwards and apply sinew
it all depends on desired results
some tiller to half draw and then apply sinew
some just floor tiller and apply sinew

there are so many variations of how to proceed,, I have tried many variations with postive results, I think sinew is pretty forgiving in its application,,
just start out simple,,and then experiment as you gain more experience,,

Okay thanks bradsmith... I think ill heat in  2" of reflex? And sinew it after floor tiller? Or maybe brace hight? I dont wanna bend it too far without a backing

i kinda think that stringing it backwards would be the best. take this with a grain of salt because i have never sinew backed a bow but wouldnt the sinew pulling it back into a reflex position be almost like a perry reflex?

I would tiller it evenly and then steam or dry heat in as much reflex as you want and then sinew back it. Wide limbs hold a sinew backing induced reflex a lot better. Trust me on this. Had a 2.5 inch wide eastern red cedar bow and it held its 3” of reflex beautifully

Okay will do...  It's 1 3/4" at fades and straight tapers down to 1/2" tips and is 59.5" long,  bends threw the handle...  what kind of reflex should i heat into it? 4" more less? And what kind of draw langth can I get out of it? Sorry so many questions! Thanks again!

I’d add in some mild recurves to keep your string from lifting off the string knocks but other than that I would do some reflexing near the handle so you get the tips forward.

I'm not fond of tillering then reflexing before applying the sinew, a floor tiller yes but that's it.  It's like compressing the cells then stretching them and I just can't see that being good for the wood.

the way I did my ERC sinew backed was I tilled to about 20 inches... then applied two layers of sinew and hung a 25 lb weight on handle and set bow with each tip on a chair so the weight would hang and not touch floor.. I let dry for about 45 days in basement before taking off weight..let dry longer before finishing bow.. it pulled in a good amount of reflex.. bow turned out pretty sweet I add.... gut
